Oldest Olive tree in Europe in Stari Bar, Montenegro
Montenegro is a Mediterranean country, where olive trees grow in abundance.
In the time of the Roman Empire, more then two thousand years ago, olive trees began to be cultivated in Bar and Ulcinj area in Montenegro. From this time and on, some of the finest olive oil in Meditteranean is being prodeced in this coastal region of Montenegro.
One of the world's oldest olive trees is located near Stari Bar in Montenegro. According to the experts, this old olive tree is said to be over 2,000 years old, it is the oldest one in Europe, and possibly in the world.
Scientific analysis of the wood tissue was carried out in 2015, which showed that the olive tree has an age of 2240 years.
The diameter of The Old Olive Tree is 10 meters and is a must-see for any visitor keen to learn about the history of Montenegro. It has been under state protection since 1957. It still bears fruits.
According to the legend, the feuding families would come to the tree to make peace with each other. This is how the area where tree is located, Mirovica earned its name, the root of the word meaning peace.
Another popular folklore tale states that friends were playing cards next to the tree. During the game, one of the players accidentally threw a lit match onto the tree, and it soon went up in flames. However, it didn’t burn the whole way. Another tale has it, a side of the olive tree has burnt out due to a massive thunder strike.
People all over the world come to witness this tree and feel absolutely amazed how it can survive for so many years going through thousands of natural calamities. Additionally, the whole area is surrounded by olive groves and there are more then 10 000 olive trees which are more then 1000 years old.. Many of these trees have been scientifically proven to predate Christ.
