Year-Round Guide to the Best Activities in Montenegro
Montenegro, a beautiful European country, is great to visit during every month in the year. However, if you want to skip the crowds and experience temperatures above 20 Celsius, May, June, September and October are the best. For those who love winter, January and February are the months to go skiing.
In this blog post we will write down different activities to do for each month, catering to diverse tastes and preferences.
January - Winter wonderland in Kolasin
Montenegro transforms into a winter wonderland in January, attracting snow lovers from around the world. Kolasin, covered in snow, becomes a paradise for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts. Make sure to visit Kolasin if you are skiing or snowboarding fan.
February – Experience Durmitor
February is one more month that is ideal for winter sports enthusiasts, especially in Durmitor, a mountain city filled with beautiful resorts and incredible nature. Take a ski lift or cosy yourself up in some of the traditional restaurants in the city center. We recommend trying out the traditional Montenegrin specialties, such as kacamak, cicvara or roasted meat that will make you warm. Add a glass of rakija and you`re good to go!
March – Coastal Adventure in Budva Rivijera
March is a great month to visit the coastal part of Montenegro and explore the historic town of Budva. With its charming old town, pristine beaches, and lively atmosphere, Budva is an ideal sunseeker spot.
Admire the views and smell of the salty Adriatic Sea, stroll along the medieval city walls, and taste the local cuisine at waterfront restaurants. Be sure to dress warmly as the temperatures drop considerately during the afternoon and night.
We love watching sunset overlooking Sveti Stefan Island, that is our absolute highlight.
April - Observe the nature in Skadar Lake
Spring already arrived in April, and the lush landscapes surrounding Skadar Lake burst into vibrant colors. Take a boat trip on Skadar lake to witness the awakening of nature, with blooming flowers and diverse bird species creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The lake's shores become a haven for hikers and birdwatchers, offering an immersive experience in Montenegro's natural beauty.
May - Jeep ride in Biogradska Gora, Bjelasica mountain
May brings warmer temperatures, making it an excellent time for outdoor activities. Biogradska Gora, one of Europe's last rainforests, is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. The park boasts pristine lakes, dense forests, and diverse wildlife. Explore the hiking trails, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and witness the beauty of Montenegro's untouched wilderness. This photo is taken on one of the highest peaks of Bjelasica mountain, Zekova Glava.
June – Visit Durmitor for hiking or ziplining
Our best recommendation for June is to go to Durmitor National Park and walk around the Black Lake, including Tara Canyon and Djurdjevica Tara Bridge. This is the time when everything becomes green, and it`s a nature`s lover paradise. Check out our tour here.
July – Escape the crowds and visit Lustica peninsula
For a more off-the-beaten-path coastal experience, and escaping the crowds, venture to the coastal peninsula of Lustica in July. With its scenic beaches and olive trees, Lustica provides a quieter alternative to the glamorous Budva and Porto Montenegro as well as busy Kotor. Our favorite places – Rose Village, Rt Veslo (on photo below) and Blue Cave near Zanjice beach.
August - Adventure in Prokletije National Park
While August offers many adventures around the Bay of Kotor, consider a trip to Prokletije. Prokletije mountains provide a serene escape with breathtaking views and a chance to try the traditional Montenegrin cuisine.
September – Experience Boka Bay on a catamaran or a speedboat
Take a boat ride in Boka Bay and make sure to visit Our Lady of the Rocks Island. September is the ideal month for all the activities in Montenegro since the temperatures are still warm, and the crowds begin to seize.
October – Go to Velika Plaza, Ulcinj
October brings tranquility, and there is no better way to relax then rent a house in Velika Plaza or along river Bojana, and spend the day reading, taking endless walk on a long sandy beach and watching into the sea (or river).
While Central Montenegro is filled with autumn colors, consider exploring the charming village of Rijeka Crnojevica. Nestled along the river, this tranquil spot offers a different perspective on Montenegro's fall foliage. Check our Skadar Lake adventure here.
November - Taste the autumn fresh products of Montenegro
Perfect place to visit in November? Stari Bar city is one of the oldest towns in the Meditteranean, also called Montenegrin Pompei. Here you can taste the traditional local products, including the perfect fresh pomegranate juice.
December - Festive Vibes in Podgorica
Before the New Year, the best place to be is Podgorica. It comes alive with festive vibes, and a square market where you`ll find happy shiny people enjoying concerts on the open, muled wine, rakija and some traditional snacks. People of all ages are welcome here.
Whether you're visiting in spring or summer, autumn or winter, Montenegro offers unique and unforgettable experiences. We are waiting for you!
